How to calculate hours between two times

  1. Convert both times to 24-hour time. 5:30 PM becomes 17:30.
  2. Subtract the start time from the end time. 17:30 − 9:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes.
  3. Subtract any unpaid break. 8:30 − 0:30 = 8 hours.
  4. If the end time is earlier than the start time, add 24 hours first. That is an overnight shift.
