Why overtime is counted per week, not per pay period
Under the FLSA, overtime is based on a single workweek of 7 consecutive days. You cannot average two weeks together. If you work 45 hours in week one and 35 hours in week two, you worked 80 hours in the pay period, but you are still owed 5 hours of overtime for week one. This calculator applies the 40 hour rule to each week separately so the result matches what you should be paid.
Biweekly vs. semi-monthly
Biweekly pay means every two weeks, which gives 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly pay means twice a month, usually on the 15th and the last day, which gives 24 paychecks. A biweekly time card always covers exactly 14 days.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is a full-time biweekly pay period?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week equals 80 hours per two-week pay period.
Is overtime calculated over two weeks?
No. Federal overtime is calculated for each 7 day workweek on its own. Working 90 hours over two weeks could include more overtime than 10 hours if one week was much longer than the other.
How many biweekly pay periods are in a year?
There are usually 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. Some years have 27 depending on which day payday falls on.
