What is double time?
Double time is pay at twice your regular hourly rate. At $20.00 an hour, double time is $40.00 an hour. Two hours of double time pay $80.00.
Example
40 regular hours, 8 overtime hours and 2 double time hours at $20.00 an hour: 40 × $20.00 + 8 × $30.00 + 2 × $40.00 = $800.00 + $240.00 + $80.00 = $1,120.00.
When is double time required?
Federal law does not require double time. California is the only state that requires it by law: for hours over 12 in a workday, and for hours over 8 on the seventh consecutive day of work in a workweek. Many employers also pay double time for holidays, call-ins or Sundays under a union contract or company policy.
